Seminar-Workshop In Family Dynamics & Counseling

The Center for Family Ministries (CEFAM) is offering this intensive, two-week seminar workshop particularly for persons and agencies whose work is focused on helping families.

The program is designed to develop:

KNOWLEDGE

  • Look at a family not simply as pathological/ dysfunctional but also with opportunities and strengths
  • Appreciate the Filipino family psyche
  • Exposure to different family counseling/therapy approaches
  • Learn family dynamics from a systems theory perspective
  • Understand crises/transitions & how families can cope
  • Learn “differentiation of self”, “boundaries”, and its implication to the Filipino concept of “family connectedness”
  • Awareness and understanding on how one’s emotional birth order molds a person’s personality, behavior, and managerial skills.

SKILLS

  • Assessment
  • Identify healthy patterns of behavior/ strengths and use them
  • Capacity to “define self”
  • Identify which family counseling approach would fit the helper
  • Distinguish: Ordinary conversation and counseling
  • Confession and counseling
  • Spiritual direction and counseling
  • Advice-giving and counseling
  • Treatment:
  • Observe the different family counseling/ therapy approaches demonstrated and try to use them under supervision
  • Use reflecting skills for empathy and the ability to clarify
  • Transference/ counter transference and referral

ATTITUDES

  • Awareness of being a “church” and deepen hope, trust, faith, and humility
  • Awaken and appreciate the dignity of person despite deep psychological problems
  • Deepen compassion (empathy) as one looks across generations
  • Appreciate “Serenity Prayer”

The seminar-workshop will make use of:

  • a psycho-spiritual approach in helping couples
  • experiential process activities, both individually and in groups
  • demonstration of counseling sessions
  • role play sessions
  • lectures, readings, case studies
  • growth group process
